Course Material

Course Material Download Time

When you collect your next lesson from the student menu (using the lessons button) please bear in mind that some of the material can take a little while to appear, particularly if it is rich in diagrams. However, we always try to keep the download time to the very minimum. Please remember that download time will depend on the speed of your modem, and the technical specification of your computer – its hard drive capacity, RAM (memory), graphics card, and even the type of browser you have. Please be patient. Next time you load that same lesson, it should be faster, because your computer should have many of the items in your cache (computer memory).

Tests

Tests open in a new browser window

Each new test you select will open in a new window. When you close the new window, you will return to the page underneath. Or, you can minimize the new window to your taskbar, for recall later. You can, of course, have as many new windows, or new lessons, or tests, open at the same time as you wish, by minimizing them down to your taskbar.  You can use your normal Windows controls for all of this.

Please note that certain courses will have a mixture of “written” tests and a multi-choice online test. Others will have only “written” tests.

At the end of each lesson (or assignment), you will be prompted to take the test for that Lesson. There will be a hyperlink to the test, which will open up into a new window of your browser.

You need to decide whether you are going to take the test whilst you are still online, i.e. still connected to the Internet.  Or you may wish to do the test whilst disconnected from the Internet.

Here are the various alternatives examined in detail:

Taking a test whilst still connected to the Internet –

Just fill in the boxes (blank spaces below the questions), SAVE A COPY TO YOUR HARD DRIVE AS A TEXT FILE (if you save as an HTML or web page then you will probably lose what you have typed in). Then press the “Submit Test” button at the end of the page. Your test will be sent to the college for marking. PLEASE make sure your email address is filled in correctly – check and double-check before submitting it.

Take test having disconnected from the Internet –

Disconnect from the Internet, but DO NOT close your browser window, and do not change the page location in your browser address bar. You may, however, minimize the window if you wish, just be careful not to close it. Now, complete the questions on the screen. SAVE A COPY TO YOUR HARD DRIVE (again in text format, see above) and of course this will give you a copy for your own reference. When you are ready, reconnect to the internet. Press the submit button, and your test should be sent to the College.

You can also upload your test as an attachment from the Student Area by clicking the “Upload Tests” Link on the sidebar.

Printing

You can, of course, print out any section of your lessons. Choose Print from the File menu of your Web browser to start the print. Please note that we cannot control or guess at the way your printer is set up, and this may result in some pages breaking mid-paragraph or even mid diagram. Or possibly the right margin may cut short the text.  If this happens, don’t forget, most printers will allow you to print out ‘a selection’. To do this highlight the area on the screen that you would like to print, click File, then Print and on your printer control box there should be a button that you can click to print the ‘Selection’ (normally in the ‘Print Range’ section).
